Temper Tantrums

I am not one to brag about my child, but she is an advanced tantrum thrower.  Most kids don't start throwing tantrums until they are toddlers, but mine started throwing tantrums at the ripe old age of 10 months old.  In fact, she was throwing tantrums before she was able to walk or talk.  No big deal.

Despite the fact that she does not get her way when she throws tantrums, she continues to try.  Apparently she is holding out hope that one day I will change my mind.

Maybe your child won't be as advanced in this department as mine, but guess what?  He/she WILL thrown a tantrum at some point.  Most likely, the tantrum(s) will come in a public place where you have to grit your teeth and try to be appear nice while the other moms are looking at you with judgmental eyes (which is total bulls*^% because their kids do it too).

Why, you ask?  Why do they throw tantrums?  Well, the answer to that should be obvious.  Toddlers are forced to endure a series of injustices, mostly at hands of their parents, on a daily basis.  To help you  better understand this, I have provided a list that, while not all-inclusive, will give you an idea of what drives these emotional little beings of ours.

I do ask though, please don't judge me, as many of the things listed below show what a cruel parent I really am.  Here goes:

  • I make her sit in her plush $350 jogging stroller, snacking on organic fruit pouches, enjoying the beautiful scenery on the local trail, while I push her in a desperate attempt to jog off the stomach weight that I gained carrying her.  Cruel.

The calm before the storm.  You can see
how hard her life is and why she would
feel compelled to fight back against this situation.

  • There were no more crayons left in the crayon box.  Damn you, Mommy, for only buying the 24 pack!

This demonstrates the "I am forcing
myself to cry" tantrum.

  • I forced her to poop in her diaper and then had the audacity to try and change it.  Selfish, I know, but I just love changing poopy diapers.  It is pretty much the reason that I had kids.

  • After playing outside for hours, Daddy made her come in to go to bed.

"You can cuff me, Officer, but I am
NOT getting out of this car."

  • Mommy made Moose throw her pacifier on the floor while driving on the highway, so Moose no longer has a pacifier.

  • All Moose asked for in life is for her teeth to rot, but Mommy and Daddy insist on brushing them every single night.  Why should she have to suffer so that Mommy and Daddy can pursue their hobby of forcefully brushing the teeth of a toddler who bites their fingers?

  • I insist on pushing Moose around in the shopping cart and handing her snacks to eat while I spend my hard earned money to buy things.  For her.

She simply cannot take it anymore.

  • I refused to let her run through the parking lot and get smushed by a car.  Could Moose have chosen to hold hands and continue to walk?  Sure.  But is throwing a fit and having to be carried into the store more fun?  Apparently.

  • The Easter Bunny brought her presents.

Why did he choose to visit my house?!

  • Mommy and Daddy took her to the pool for the sole purpose of tormenting her by not letting her walk off the edge into 8 feet of water.  To add insult to injury, when it was time to go home, they made her take off her wet swimsuit.

And, my personal favorite:

  • Mommy and Auntie C took Moose and A on vacation where they forced them to go to the beach and play with the endless sand toys and pool that they schlepped down with them.  In the interest of full disclosure, snacks and sippy cups were also brought and offered to these poor, tortured girls.  Let me ask you, who can blame them for having this visceral reaction?

So, there is is, folks.  A few of the many injustices that My Moose endures on a daily basis that cause her to throw herself on the floor in a fit of rage.  What terrible things do you do to your toddler to make them throw tantrums?  Please share, especially if a hilarious picture (like the ones above) accompanies the story!

  2. Thank you so much, Courtney! I have to laugh at it or I will lose my mind! When I was posting the pictures, I turned to Josh and asked, "am I a cruel mom for having all of these pictures of her throwing tantrums because that clearly means that I am sitting around laughing at her." :)

  5. "Apparently she is holding out hope that one day I will change my mind." hey..what is life without hope? :)

This post was so cute...and exhausting! I remember the tantrum days. I'm afraid I didn't pull it off quite as well as you and missed many great pic opportunities since I was too busy hiding in the closet and crying (for myself and not their "misery") during the tantrums.

With any luck she'll enter the phase early and exit early.

    1. You are right...I guess hope really does spring eternal. ;)

The fact that you are speaking about tantrums in the past tense means that they do end, right? Ugh. I have to just laugh and take pictures because, if not, I will either cry or yell. Probably both. Toddlers are sweet and hilarious, but can really turn on a dime.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  6. Oh the misery! I force my 5 year old to ride in a booster seat with a seat belt rather than wander the car and be thrown through the windshield. Well, that's today's issue, at least!

    1. Lol! It looks like you are just as cruel of a Mom as I am. ;) The things that they choose to argue about are so funny. I wouldn't argue if someone put me in a cushy seat and drove me around all day!

  7. Hilarious! I take my kids to see Santa which makes them scream and cry every year. Last year we got a picture before and after the crying started and I have to say I like the crying photo better. Cracks me up!

    1. The crying ones are always better, aren't they?! My daughter also screamed when she met Santa this year (I wish I would have added that to the above list). Who can blame her though? I would hate to meet someone who was going to bring me presents simply for doing the things that I am supposed to do all year. ;)

      Thanks for the comment! :)

  8. hahahaha I love this! My little guy started tantrums early as well, and he throws a lot of them! I was saying he was going through terrible twos before he was even 1 haha. I can't help but laugh a lot of the time over the ridiculousness that he gets so upset about haha. Ohhhhh toddlerhood.

    1. Agree! If you don't laugh, you will just go nuts. Perhaps that is why I take pictures. :) I just wish that I could impress upon her how good her life actually is. Too bad she is too young to realize that it only goes downhill from toddlerhood!

Thanks so much for commenting and good luck with your little advanced tantrum thrower! ;)

  16. Haha!

Yes, my kids were not big tantrum throwers, but they did try a few times. You know - the throwing back of the head and making the body stiff. Oh yes. The joys of being a toddler.

Typically, when my kids get into this type of behavior, I put them in the sling and carry them. They get it out of their system and we move on. In my case, it's usually about getting attention from Mom, and by carrying them close, it helps.

If that doesn't help, and we are in a public place, I walk over them and keep going.

Thanks for the post, and for linking up with us at Mommy Monday!

    1. Yes, I love the stiffening of the body. So dramatic!

The sling idea is a great one. I usually sit down and hug her close (after taking a picture, of course). ;) She resists at first and then eventually settles down. I think that she sometimes just needs to blow off steam and get it out of her system.

Love the advice for public places!

Thanks for commenting and for helping host Mommy Monday!

  18. Totally love it! I think Zeva is at least giving your little one a run for the money in having the most temper tantrums. She has them over every little thing...such as not being allowed to climb all the way to the top of her brother's bedroom door and going into his room filled with many choking hazards to say the least, not letting her pull a boiling pan of water off the stove, not letting her climb to the top of the entertainment center, and so many more things. Sometimes she just stands in the middle of the room and stomps her feet and screams at the top of her lungs for no apparent reason at all!! I can't wait until this lovely stage is OVER!!!

I loved your outlook on this wonderful stage we have to endure. I don't know how to attach pictures in this comment box (nor do I post them online, but I have many pictures of her having fits I could show you. ;))

    1. I would LOVE to see pictures of your little one throwing tantrums. I like that I am not the only mom who takes pictures when her little one is in the middle of a tantrum. What else can you do but laugh?!

Sounds like Zeva also has some really awful things happen to her that cause her to thrown tantrums. Haha. Mine also just throws them for no reason sometimes. I think that it helps her wind down at night. I will also be happy when she stops doing it!!

Thanks so much for commenting and good luck with your little tantrumer!! :)

  22. Ha, I love these pictures! With my first, I couldn't imagine sharing pictures while he was crying, but by my third? They're my favorite ones (when they're silly tantrums of course). It's amazing how "tough" they have it, these poor babies, huh? Fun post, and just love these pictures. Will be awesome to share one day (I'm thinking prom).

I also love the pictures of kids throwing tantrums. I mean, it's not like anything is actually wrong with them. Plus, as parents, if we don't laugh, we will go crazy!

  25. Oh goodness! That is the funniest thing ever! I feel blessed that mine only had one or two between the three of them...they learned very quickly that tantrums were not acceptable...especially when mommy showed them how it was done! LOL! I became very good at embarrassing them beyond belief! :) Now at 11, 13, & 20...nothing that I do shocks them at all! LOL! Have a great week!

  26. Lol! I look forward to when she is old enough for me to embarrass her to show her what it feels like. :) Sadly though, she has the upper hand on that right now, so I have pretty much accepted that I will be embarrassed at least once a week in public. Ah...the joys of mothering. Haha.

Thanks so much for your sweet comment! :)
