A Scream in the Night

A few weeks ago, in the middle of the night, Moosey woke up screaming.  This is completely out of character for her, so I ran into her room to see what was wrong.  She was heaving with sobs by this point, so I picked her up and held her and rocked her until her she calmed down a bit.  I then asked her what was wrong.  Looking pitiful and still hiccuping from crying so hard, she looked at me, tears still staining her cheeks, and said, "necklace."

I just looked at her, totally dumbfounded, and simply said, "what?" although in my head, it sounded a lot more like WTF.

She looked at me, again, this time totally calm, and said, "Myra necklace please."

Yes.  She woke us at 3am, screaming and crying because she wanted an f'in necklace.  Are you kidding me?

I just looked at her, wanting to cry myself now, and said, "it is time for night-night.  We can have a necklace in the morning."  Of course, because she is a toddler, this was not satisfactory to her, so we were up, in heavy negotiations, for the next two hours.

Sigh.

Rockin' her necklaces!  Please excuse the
background.  It was sheet changing day.

Everyone warns you that newborn babies don't sleep, but what no one tells you is this: once you have kids, sleep is never again guaranteed.  My sweet little Moose started sleeping through the night at 6.5 weeks old and by through the night, I mean 12 hours at a time.  (I know, you hate me.  I don't blame you.  I am realistic though.  I know that it was just dumb luck and that I should count my blessings.  Trust me, I do).

Even with her being a good sleeper though, a full night's sleep is never a guarantee.  Sometimes she wakes up because she isn't feeling well or because she has a bad dream.  Sometimes she is thirsty.  And sometimes she just wants some accessories.  Is that too stinkin' much to ask?

Nothing is sweeter than a sleeping baby.

  1. Laughing so hard over here!!! A necklace...you have a diva in the making :) haha. My son has done this before too, not for a necklace, but for an iron man doll thing that took me an hour to find.

  4. They have their moments. ;) Toddlers are seriously the most interesting type of people in the world. Most of the time, she is great. Super happy, talkative, and hilarious. The other 5% of the time though...oh. my. goodness. Crazy!

  5. Thanks so much for your sweet comment! I did have to laugh at the story, but not until the next morning. I was too tired and baffled to laugh in the middle of the night though. :)

  6. Total diva. :) The first thing that she does every morning is ask for a bow.

I am glad that my child is not the only one who has done something like this. Normally, I would have just given her whatever odd thing she wanted just so that I could go to sleep, but her "necklaces" are Mardi Gras beads, so they are a huge strangulation hazard. I tried to appease her with any other toy, but as you know from having a child, nothing else would do!

    Thanks for commenting. :)

  7. 6.5 weeks? Are you for real? Yeah...kinda hate you...in the most friendly way possible. V has never been a great sleeper and we are well acquainted with the middle of the night screaming. V loves to settle between us and pinch our faces, kick us, demand bubble guppies, etc. lucky us.

  8. That is the funniest thing I've ever heard. A necklace. Awesome. I am so glad I don't have kids. The dog has not once asked for a necklace in the middle of the night. So far.

  10. Lol! It's okay...I don't blame you for hating me. :) I am SO lucky that she has always been a good sleeper. I don't know what I will do if we have another child and he/she isn't a good sleeper. Yikes!

Myra went through a stage where she stopped sleeping for two months (worst two months EVER) and she spent some time sleeping with us. It was awful because she moves so much that we couldn't sleep!

And the fact that V demands bubble guppies in the middle of the night is hysterical. These kids are funny. :)

  13. Oh my lands! That is to funny! This will be a great story to tell her when she gets older. That is such a cute picture of her with all of her necklaces. You can tell she is proud of them. So sweet!

  14. You are so right about sleep not being a guarantee way past infancy! Our kids seem to go through different phases but I remember one rough time when our oldest was waking 5-6 times a night! She mostly just wanted to be tucked back in but you never know what it might be. Anything from a sip of water to necklaces! :)

  15. You Always crack me up when I come to your blog. So funny that she woke up just for that. Don't you just love toddlers. I can only imagine what my 19 month old would want at that hour besides my boob lol. Thanks for sharing at Mommy Monday! :)

  16. Very funny story but probably very tiring for you!

  17. Aren't they though! It is like their little brains work so much faster than they can handle, so their emotions take over. Although I was exhausted, I had to laugh. Kids! :)

  18. Thank you so much! You are right...she really was SO proud of those necklaces. I just wish that she could have limited her necklace loving to the daytime hours. ;)

Thanks so much for your comment!

  19. 5-6 times a night?! Poor you! The sleep thing is so tough because you can really never rest soundly knowing that you might have to get up at any second.

    Thanks for commenting! :)

  20. Thank you so much, Brittnei! Toddlers are a special breed for sure. ;) I feel like their little minds move so fast that they just get overwhelmed by emotions. I guess, in her mind, something woke her up and she could only think of necklaces! At least when she wanted the boob or the bottle, she would fall asleep again right away. Whatever they want though..waking up at night is tough! :)

  21. It was exhausting, but I did have to laugh. How could I not?!

  22. The girl's got a point, she looks great with those necklaces LOL your story had me laughing so hard, yet at the same time felt so familiar. Mine woke me up this week because she needed her handbag, as in now. And yep, the same negotations were in order. The things we do to keep them happy and for us to get some sleep.

I've learned pretty quickly too that sleeping has just become an option, nights are now tougher with her than when she was a baby. I can't remember the last good night of sleep I had. Totally getting you!

  23. Hilarious! A handbag...lol. Looks like we both have little divas in the making. :)

It really is amazing how the sleep thing actually goes downhill the older that they get. I don't think about it much, but I really, really do miss sleeping. Sigh.
